1 Alfred Street's use is restricted by the following covenants.

  • Not to erect any building without the sellor or successors permission (which shall not be unreasonably withheld).
  • Not to use the property for any purpose other than offices.
  • Not to do or permit any act or thing to be done to the property which shall be or tend to become a nuisance or annoyance to the vendors or owners/occupiers of 3 Mill Street.
  • Not to use the property for storage of building material or lumber, other than in connection with works on the building.
  • To maintain the roof valley .
  • Not to trade/sell alcoholic drinks without permission of the vendor/occupier.

The covenants were applied in 1978, when 3 Mill Street was The Castle public house. The owners of 1 Alfred Street believe some of them are not now relevant. We have contacted Punch Taverns, who are successor in title to Allied Breweries, who originally sold the building with the covenants and have not been given a reason for the covenants to remain.

The owners of 1 Alfred Street believe the covenants interfere with the reasonable use of the building and their removal would not cause any disadvantage or decrease the value of neighbouring properties and is contrary to the public interest. The Vale of White Horse District Council have indicated that they would look favourably on an application to convert 1 Alfred Street to residential. However, those benefiting from the covenants are under no obligation to remove them and do not wish to discuss it.
